What is Assisted Living?

Assisted living is a flexible and supportive housing option designed for people who may need help with daily activities and some health care services but do not require 24-hour skilled nursing care for extended periods of time. These communities offer a combination of companionship, independence, privacy, and security. Whether someone has an intellectual, developmental, cognitive, or sensory disability, assisted living communities provide support with personal care such as bathing, dressing, and meal prepping, medication administration, and housekeeping. They are designed to be accessible and to meet a range of ability levels.

These residential opportunities promote independence, dignity, and a meaningful lifestyle, emphasizing personal choice and social engagement. Residents usually have private living spaces and access to communal facilities for dining, social activities, and recreation. Staff members are trained to provide person-centered assistance tailored to each person's goals, preferences, and abilities.

Assisted living offers a bridge between fully independent living and more intensive care options like skilled nursing facilities, enabling residents to maintain autonomy while accessing the help they need.

Hope's Services

Creating a home, building a future—together

For more than five decades, Hope Community Resources has been honored to support Alaskans who experience disabilities and their families. As Alaska has grown, so have we—expanding our services to meet the unique needs of individuals and communities across the state.

Every person deserves the chance to shape their own life, their own home, and their own future. That’s why we offer personalized residential services that focus on independence, choice, and community. Whether someone wants to live with family, in a group home, or in their own apartment, we’re here to help make that happen—within their chosen urban or rural community.

Support that fits your life

Everyone’s needs are different, so the level of support we provide is guided by each person and their family or guardian. We offer as much or as little help as needed in the areas that matter most.

If you or a loved one is largely independent but could benefit from intermittent support, Hope offers supported living services—either in one of our welcoming apartments or in a home of your choice. Our trained staff come to you, providing assistance with your personalized goals at the times that best fit your schedule and lifestyle. For those who need more consistent, day-to-day support, our Group Home services provide continuous on-site staff presence in one of Hope’s licensed assisted living homes—each designed to be safe, comfortable, and supportive of individual needs.

When traditional residential settings don’t fully meet a person’s needs, Hope leads with innovative and flexible solutions to provide stability and support. At the same time, we continue advocating for improvements in public policy to address gaps in the State’s continuum of care.

Activities of Daily Living

Assistance with bathing, getting dressed, meal preparation, eating, and personal hygiene.

Health and Wellness

Support with medications, getting to appointments, staying connected to healthcare providers, and making sure the necessary equipment and care are in place.

Community Inclusion

Encouraging involvement in everyday activities—shopping, going to the bank, volunteering, attending cultural or educational events, enjoying recreation, participating in spiritual gatherings, and spending time with friends and family.

All of this is tailored through a Person-Centered Support Plan that is designed and directed by the person in tandem with their support network to ensure care happens the way they want it to—right in their home, every day.

A commitment you can count on

At Hope, people always have the choice to change or end services if they wish. Our commitment is to stand by the people we serve and support them through every chapter of their journey.

A home is not just where you live—it's where you belong.

When we imagine what makes a house truly feel like home, we think of comfort, safety, and the freedom to be ourselves. We want spaces that offer both privacy and connection—a place to retreat when we need quiet, as well as a place to gather with loved ones. We want to surround ourselves with meaningful belongings, express our personality, identity, and culture, and make choices that reflect who we are.

We have built our assisted living homes around these same values. Each home is thoughtfully designed for support and stability where the people living there can feel safe, valued, and like they belong.

From shared meals around the table to birthday celebrations and community outings, life in our homes is full of opportunities to build lasting friendships and joyful memories. Each home is supported by skilled direct support professionals—whether through live-in staff or shift-based teams—who provide personalized care and a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere.

With person-centered support, accessible spaces, and a commitment to relationship-based care, we work hard to ensure that every resident feels seen, supported, and "at home."

Why Families Choose Hope

Specialized Care for People with Varying Needs

Our team is trained and equipped to support people facing a wide range of developmental, behavioral, and complex medical challenges. This includes support for those who require feeding tubes, mobility equipment, seizure protocols, behavioral health interventions, and more. We also serve people with dual diagnoses, sensory processing disorders, autism spectrum disorders, and those who need communication support through augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices. Our staff are skilled in assisting with personal care, medication administration, and the use of assistive technologies, and we offer full support for people who require 24/7 supervision.

We honor each person's goals, preferences, and routines—whether they live in a shared residence, their own home, or participate in our community-based programs. We are also experienced in helping people transition from hospitals, institutions, or foster care into supportive, long-term, community-based settings. We provide capable, compassionate, and comprehensive support tailored to each person's needs, ensuring care is delivered safely and responsibly.

Behavioral Health Clinic & Therapeutic Supports

In 2023, Hope was recognized by ADN's 'Best of Alaska' as a leading Behavioral & Mental Health Provider. We have an on-site Behavioral Health Clinic in Anchorage that provides professional support to people with emotional and/or behavioral challenges. Services include psychotherapy, case management, behavioral intervention planning, mental health assessments, autism services, crisis prevention, community-based rehabilitation, and therapeutic treatment. These supports are essential for maintaining stability, improving coping skills, and reducing behavioral episodes—all while honoring the person's dignity and autonomy.

Medical Expertise

Hope employs an on-call Medical Director, Dr. William Browner, who brings 40+ years of experience in complex and developmental care. His availability around the clock ensures that urgent health questions are answered promptly and that medical decisions are made with expert oversight. This level of access to a physician is rare in residential services and provides an added layer of security and informed care.

Nursing Support

Hope has a team of Registered Nurses (RN) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) who support our direct care staff with medical questions, assessments, and follow-ups. This professional guidance helps promote positive health outcomes, prevents unnecessary emergency interventions, and supports both safety and confidence in care.

Comprehensive Transportation Services

Hope provides free, reliable, door-to-door transportation for residents of our assisted living homes, using our fleet of accessible vehicles and trained drivers. Transportation is available for medical appointments, recreational outings, errands, community events, and any other activities outside the home. We believe in the importance in community participation and ensuring residents can stay engaged, healthy, and connected.

Accessible Homes

Our homes are designed with safety and accessibility in mind. Some feature ranch-style layouts, no-step entries, ramps, roll-in showers, wide hallways, grab bars, and accessible kitchens to support safe and independent living, particularly for those who use mobility devices.

Accessibility isn't one-size-fits-all, so while not all homes have the same modifications, we can customize living spaces to meet each person's specific needs and preferences. Whether it’s specialized lighting, adaptive technology, a sensory-friendly environment, or a personalized floor plan, we work closely with the people we support and their support teams to create homes that reflect who they are and what they need.

Private Bedrooms

Every resident enjoys the privacy and comfort of their own bedroom. Private rooms support dignity, autonomy, and personal expression, giving them a space that they can make their own. Rooms can be decorated and furnished to reflect each person's preferences and personality.

Aging in Place

Few things are as difficult as being uprooted from the place you call home, especially as you grow older. That's why we believe in supporting people to age in place—in the homes and communities they love. As people grow older or encounter new health challenges, their needs change—and so do our services. With thoughtful planning and adaptable services, we help people continue to live with dignity, safety, comfort, and connection as they grow older, maintaining stability and avoiding unnecessary moves.

Person-Centered Philosophy

We believe that every person has the right to make choices about how they live. Our services are guided by what matters most to each person and their family, from daily routines to long-term goals. This means we listen carefully, adapt supports respectfully, and celebrate each person's unique strengths, abilities, and preferences. Residents are not just recipients of care—they are active participants in their lives.

Community-Centered Approach

Hope homes are located in real neighborhoods—not institutions—and we believe community connection is absolutely essential to leading a full, meaningful life. We build and maintain relationships with local businesses and service providers to ensure our residents are welcomed and included in their community of choice. We offer regular group activities, seasonal celebrations, and community outings. Participation is always voluntary and personalized to residents' interests.

A Place for Family

One of our properties, which we call 'Jeffrey's Hope,' is a dedicated residence in Anchorage for visiting family members who may not have another place to stay or who are facing financial hardship. It offers a safe, welcoming space so families can stay close to their loved ones during times of need, healing, or transition.

Pet-Friendly Policy

We recognize the meaningful emotional and therapeutic benefits that animals can bring to some people's lives. That's why some of our homes are pet-friendly—by arrangement—allowing for pets or therapy animals when appropriate and desired. We respect the needs of those who may have allergies, sensory sensitivities, or prefer a pet-free environment. Our goal is to create living spaces that honor everyone's comfort, safety, and well-being.

Regular Reviews

To ensure continuous quality improvement and a proactive approach to care, our teams regularly review every person's individualized Person-Centered Support Plan and collaborate to ensure that the supports Hope is providing remain aligned with the person's current goals and needs.

Commitment to Regulatory Compliance

Hope meets or exceeds all applicable state and federal requirements for licensing, safety, staffing, and care delivery. We view compliance, not just as a box to check, but as a baseline for quality care. Regular audits and internal reviews ensure we remain in good standing and committed to excellence.

Guided by Core Values

Our mission and values are rooted in a deep respect for people who experience disabilities. Everything we do is guided by a set of ten core values that reflect our commitment to person-centered services, inclusion, and the belief that everyone has an equal right to a life filled with purpose and possibility. These values shape how we build relationships, deliver services, and develop environments and opportunities where people of all abilities can lead meaningful lives. Together, they form the foundation of our approach to supporting people in living self-directed lives within their communities of choice.

Neuro-Inclusive Intentional Communities

We offer neuro-inclusive intentional living communities—life-sharing environments where people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) live together in ways that honor each person’s strengths, choices, and contributions. These are not just residences; they are communities focused on autonomy, belonging, mutual support, and meaningful connection.

Intentional communities are designed to be fully integrated with the broader community. Residents participate in everyday life—working, volunteering, building relationships, and engaging in local activities—while also benefiting from a home environment built with purpose and care. At the heart of this model is a simple but powerful belief: every person is whole. People are not defined by disability, but recognized for their humanity, abilities, and potential. Growth happens through relationships, and our communities are built to support those connections—between residents, staff, families, and neighbors. With consistent, high-quality support and encouragement, residents have opportunities to thrive, while staff are part of a positive, reciprocal environment that strengthens everyone involved.

Across Alaska, people with I/DD and their families face a growing housing crisis. Many adults want what anyone wants—a stable home, meaningful relationships, and the ability to make choices about their own lives. Yet too often, housing options are limited or rely heavily on aging caregivers. Neuro-inclusive housing addresses this gap by bringing together an innovative housing design, support services, and community connection into one cohesive model. It moves away from group home approaches and toward environments that promote independence, dignity, and long-term stability.

For many families, one question remains constant: what will happen when I can no longer provide care to my loved one? Intentional communities offer a sustainable answer—creating lifelong homes where support does not depend solely on family, but is built into the community itself. These communities are also designed for aging in place. As needs change over time, supports can also adapt without requiring someone to leave their home. This continuity provides stability for residents and peace of mind for families.

For People with I/DD

Having a home that is designed for your needs changes everything. Neuro-inclusive housing supports independence while ensuring help is available when needed.

It offers:

  • A stable place to live
  • Privacy and personal space
  • Choice in daily routines and supports
  • The ability to stay in one home long term

A home is more than a place to live—it’s the foundation for a full life.

For Families and Caregivers

Many families provide support for decades, often with little relief. As caregivers age, the uncertainty about the future can be overwhelming.

Neuro-inclusive housing:

  • Reduces reliance on aging caregivers
  • Provides long-term stability
  • Allows families to stay involved without being the sole support
  • Offers peace of mind about what comes next

This model helps ensure loved ones are supported—even when families can no longer do it alone.

For Communities

Inclusive housing benefits entire communities, not just individuals with I/DD. It strengthens neighborhoods, reduces isolation and homelessness, creates sustainable housing solutions, and reflects shared values of dignity and belonging. When housing works for people with I/DD, it works better for everyone.

The Kenai Intentional Neighborhood

The Kenai Intentional Neighborhood is a connected, life-sharing community shaped by families and residents who value belonging and mutual support. It is more than a collection of homes—it is a neighborhood where people live, grow, and contribute together.

Residents enjoy a country lifestyle while remaining actively connected to their community. Daily life may include gardening, caring for animals, and spending time outdoors, alongside participating in local activities such as shopping, attending services, and social outings. A central focus of the Kenai community is ensuring that every person experiences a true sense of belonging as a valued, contributing member of the neighborhood. Supporting one another, both in everyday moments and in times of need, is fundamental to life here.

For many families, the Kenai Intentional Neighborhood represents an answer to a personal question about the future—offering a place where their loved ones will continue to live with dignity, connection, and care.

The Willow Ranch

The Willow Ranch reflects a different vision of intentional living that offers a rural lifestyle, self-sufficiency, and connection to the land.

Developed in response to people with I/DD who wanted to move away from urban environments, the Ranch provides opportunities to live and work in a natural setting. Situated on 70 acres, the Ranch supports activities such as animal husbandry, woodworking, fishing, and small-scale agriculture. Residents participate in meaningful daily work such as caring for animals, tending gardens, and building skills related to rural living that contributes to the community and builds independence.

The impact has been profound. Residents experience increased confidence, stronger social connections, and a greater sense of purpose. The Ranch offers a uniquely Alaskan approach to intentional living.

Looking Ahead: A Third Intentional Community

We are actively planning a third intentional community in the Mat-Su Borough—an opportunity to expand this model and meet the growing need for neuro-inclusive housing in Alaska.

This new community is being thoughtfully designed from the ground up. Our vision includes a collection of homes alongside shared spaces that bring people together for gatherings, celebrations, meals, and community events. These shared environments will not only serve residents, but also welcome families, neighbors, and the broader community, reinforcing connection rather than separation.

Location is a key priority. The community will likely be close to town, ensuring access to transportation, employment opportunities, healthcare, and everyday services. At the same time, it will maintain a sense of space and intentional design that allows opportunities for both independence and connection.

We are also planning for long-term sustainability. The homes will be designed for accessibility and aging in place, allowing residents to remain in their community as their needs change. The neighborhood will intentionally preserve strong relationships, ensuring that residents are known, valued, and supported as individuals—not just as part of a system.

Most importantly, this community is being shaped in partnership with people with I/DD and their families who are thinking about the future. Many parents are seeking a permanent, stable home for their adult children that will continue to provide care, connection, and belonging long after they are no longer able to do so themselves.
