Juneteenth
Citywide Celebration hosted by Juneteenth Anchorage
Saturday, June 17, 2023, 1pm
Delany Parkstrip, Anchorage
Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth celebrates a point in African American history that changed the direction of our future and transcended generations and is a must for our community to remember.
The Juneteenth Anchorage Citywide Celebration will be marked with celebrations, guest speakers, entertainment, education, learning our history and family gatherings. It is a time for reflection and rejoicing. It is a time for assessment, self-improvement and for planning the future. Its growing popularity signifies a level of maturity and dignity in America long overdue. In cities across the country, people of all races, nationalities and religions are joining hands to truthfully acknowledge a period in our history that shaped and continues to influence our society today. Sensitized to the conditions and experiences of others, only then can we make significant and lasting improvements in our society.
Following that, UAA Student Activities and UAA Multicultural Student Services are partnering with the Juneteenth Anchorage committee to organize this year's closing celebration for Juneteenth. On Monday, June 19th, visit UAA's Fine Arts Building for a shared meal from 4 to 6 pm, and then move into the recital hall for a more formal closing ceremony from 6 to 8 pm. Food will be served from Davons' Place House of Soul and delicious desserts from Sugar Green AK. The formal ceremony that follows will be hosted by NAACP Anchorage Branch Alaska.
