Hope's Executive Director, Steve Lesko, shares his thoughts about the importance of the Magic of Ordinary Days.
At Hope we believe that the “Magic of Ordinary Days” is what constitutes a full life. The day to day things that each of us takes for granted, such as when we get out of bed, what we’ll have for dinner, who we’ll visit with or where we’ll go shopping, are things that can be foreign to some one who experiences a disability. In creating full lives for individuals who choose Hope’s services, the goal is to create an environment in which all stakeholders have a sense of belonging, are treated with dignity and respect, know they have value and worth and feel they belong to something larger than themselves that represents morality and a higher good.
In order for someone to reach their full potential, they must first have meaningful and appropriate activities to choose from. Then there must be an environment that teaches do with, rather than for; engaging the person in the task from beginning to end. Creating a full life starts with people making choices such as what type of job they might want, types of recreation they would like to paricipate in and who they want to hang out with.
